David Moyes, the former manager of Manchester United, has pointed to Pep Guardiola as the primary challenge for his former club.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final Premier League win in the 2012/13 season, Manchester United has not claimed another title. The club has experienced numerous managerial changes and squad overhauls since Ferguson’s retirement.
Following a disappointing eighth-place finish last season, the current manager, Erik ten Hag, and his team have faced considerable criticism. Although some believe this criticism is deserved due to their lackluster performance, Moyes holds a different view.
David Moyes, who left West Ham in May, has stated that Manchester United’s main challenge comes not from within the club but from external competition, specifically from Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola. In an interview on “Up Front With Simon Jordan,” Moyes remarked, “Erik ten Hag is under immense pressure, but he has performed commendably. Over the past two years, he has won two trophies despite facing ongoing criticism. I admire his resilience and determination.”
Moyes also commented on the summer speculation about ten Hag’s job security, calling it unjust. He praised ten Hag for managing the situation with great dignity and staying committed to proving himself.
Moyes concluded by stating, “The true challenge for Manchester United isn’t their manager or players, but the dominant presence of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.”
