A shock Premier League side has entered the race for Man City attacker Julian Alvarez, with the Argentine rumoured to be heading towards the Etihad exit door.
Alvarez has been with Manchester City since joining from River Plate for approximately £14 million in 2022. In his debut season, the Argentine helped City secure the Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, matching Manchester United’s achievement from 1999.
Alvarez secured the Premier League once more this season, along with the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, adding to his collection of trophies after his World Cup triumph in 2022.
With Erling Haaland firmly established as the top choice ahead of Alvarez at City, the Argentine has been strongly linked with a summer move. Arsenal has now joined the pursuit, with The Mirror reporting that they are keeping an eye on the 24-year-old’s situation, especially after his recent fallout with Pep Guardiola.
The report suggests that Arsenal are ready to start the season without acquiring a new striker, having already signed Riccardo Calafiori and David Raya on a permanent deal from Brentford. However, Alvarez’s uncertain position has caught Mikel Arteta’s attention, presenting a potential opportunity that the Gunners might find too enticing to pass up.
Alvarez could address Arteta’s issues at the forefront of the attack, as Gabriel Jesus has not become the standout player many Arsenal fans had hoped for.
The World Cup winner has netted 20 Premier League goals in 67 appearances, with only 44 starts, for Guardiola’s side. The report also suggests that Manchester City would require an overall package of approximately £80 million to consider selling Alvarez, which might be too costly for Arteta.
With home-grown Emile Smith Rowe moving to Fulham and additional departures anticipated from the Emirates, Arsenal may find themselves in a position to challenge City’s valuation of Alvarez.
