Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip is being considered by German champions Bayer Leverkusen if Jonathan Tah or another centre back leaves according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
Matip is currently a free agent after leaving Liverpool this summer when his contract ended. The 32-year-old joined Liverpool from Schalke in 2016 and enjoyed a successful tenure, winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Matip is a target for Leverkusen
As he evaluates his career options, with several clubs showing interest. Plettenberg has provided an update on Matip’s situation, stating that Leverkusen is considering him as a top alternative if Tah or another center-back departs this summer. Plettenberg shared this information on X.com, saying:
“Joel #Matip is considered one of Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s top alternatives if Jonathan Tah or another center-back leaves the club, as previously reported. Talks have been very positive.
Matip is genuinely interested in joining Leverkusen as a free agent. Although there is no final verbal agreement yet, he could potentially sign a contract through at least 2026. However, the 32-year-old former Liverpool defender has other concrete options beyond just Leverkusen.”
Tah has been heavily linked with a transfer to Bayern Munich, but the move has not yet happened. Additionally, clubs have reportedly shown interest in the 22-year-old Piero Hincapie.
