At this stage…’ – Sky reporter’s Zubimendi update suggests Liverpool still have plenty to do

It’s widely known that Liverpool are aiming to secure Martin Zubimendi as a major signing in the closing weeks of the summer transfer window. However, a recent update on Saturday evening indicates that the Reds still have a lot of work to do to complete the deal.

Since it was revealed earlier in the week that Liverpool are contemplating a move for the Real Sociedad midfielder, there have been numerous conflicting reports about the 25-year-old.

Last night, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg provided an update, stating that Liverpool’s management has officially expressed their interest in the Spain international. However, they have not yet communicated directly with his current club, which is still waiting for the player’s decision.

The journalist posted on X: “I understand that Real Sociedad has been officially notified of Liverpool’s strong interest in Martín Zubimendi. As a result, there are ongoing and concrete discussions between #LFC, the player, and his representatives, with Real Sociedad’s consent.”

There are no club-to-club negotiations at this point. The 25-year-old midfielder has not yet communicated his desire to leave to his current club.

Plettenberg’s latest update indicates that Liverpool has significant work ahead before August 30 to secure Zubimendi’s signature, especially if formal negotiations with La Real have not yet started.

It is promising that LaLiga’s club is not obstructing his departure if he wishes to leave, despite their reported offer to make him one of their highest-paid players to persuade him to stay at Anoeta.

The Spain international’s current situation mirrors that of Steven Gerrard in 2005: he faces a choice between seizing a career opportunity that could increase his chances of winning major titles—an opportunity that may not come again—or staying loyal to the club where he made his name.

For Liverpool, failing to sign Zubimendi at this point would be particularly disappointing given the timing of the transfer window, the lack of any incoming deals so far, and how close the transfer seemed recently compared to other summer rumors.

If the 25-year-old is eager to join Liverpool, it’s still possible before the end of the month, but the urgency is growing from Liverpool’s perspective to finalize the deal before the August 30 deadline.
