Liverpool fans have taken to social media to react to Darwin Nunez’s performance in their final pre-season friendly on Sunday.
In their last pre-season friendly, Liverpool faced La Liga team Las Palmas at Anfield. Although key players like Darwin Nunez and Andrew Robertson started the game, Liverpool could not find the net, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
The Reds did manage to score once, with Nunez finding the net in the 17th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
After the news broke, fans have taken to social media to express their views on the offside goal, often with strong opinions. On X, one fan responded with: “In other news, water is wet.”
Another fan commented: “Nunez and offside—have you ever seen a pair like that?”
Another quipped: “God? I know I don’t usually ask for anything or even believe you exist, but if you’re out there, could you make Darwin onside?”
Despite fans’ growing affection for Nunez since his transfer from Benfica in June 2022, the Uruguayan striker has faced challenges with his positioning, frequently resulting in goals being disallowed for offside. Last season, Nunez was flagged offside 33 times in the Premier League, more than any other player by five instances.
Despite these challenges, the striker netted 11 league goals, two more than the previous season, and provided eight assists, five more than in the 2022/23 season.
After a standout performance at the Copa America, where he scored twice in Uruguay’s journey to the semi-finals, fans are hopeful that Nunez will have his best season yet at Liverpool under Arne Slot.
On August 11, Liverpool played two friendlies. In addition to the match against Las Palmas, they faced Spanish side Sevilla earlier that morning with a different lineup.
Liverpool secured a 4-1 victory, with standout performances from several players. Luis Diaz scored twice, while Diogo Jota and Trey Nyoni added the other two goals for the Merseyside club.
