Nico Williams performs huge u-turn on his future as favourites emerge to seal stunning transfer

Spain winger Nico Williams has performed a huge u-turn on his future, according to reports.

Williams’ standout performance in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory in Germany increased his attractiveness in the summer transfer market. His £49 million release clause heightened interest from major clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Spain teammate and Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal was actively trying to persuade Williams to join him at Barcelona.

By the end of July, reports indicated that Williams had decided to remain with Athletic Bilbao for the upcoming La Liga season. However, just a few weeks later, Ivan San Antonio of SPORT reported that Williams had reconsidered his decision.

According to sources close to the club, San Antonio reports that Williams has informed Barcelona of his desire to join them this summer.

The 21-year-old’s willingness to join Barcelona is a major advantage for the Catalan club, which remains hopeful of signing him. However, there are still obstacles to overcome, particularly the challenge of securing the funds needed to meet his release clause.

Barcelona are optimistic about securing the necessary funds next week to finalize the deal. They have already succeeded in signing another key target, Dani Olmo, a former academy player, for £51 million from RB Leipzig. Olmo has signed a six-year contract and has a €500 million buy-out clause in his new deal.
