Romano: Liverpool weighing up move for £26m colossus who’s the most valuable player in his position

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool are considering a move for a standout player from Euro 2024, viewing it as a genuine opportunity to finalize a deal.

The Reds are said to be interested in Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The plan is to acquire the 23-year-old and immediately loan him back to Mestalla.

On his, Italian transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano confirmed the rumors and noted that Giorgi Mamardashvili would be interested in joining Liverpool and being loaned back to Valencia. Romano stated, “There have been many inquiries about Giorgi Mamardashvili and Liverpool, as he’s frequently linked with the club. I can confirm the story—Liverpool have the chance to sign Mamardashvili and loan him out immediately.

“Liverpool have the option to secure Mamardashvili now and then loan him out. Bournemouth is one potential destination, but there are other clubs interested as well.”

“Liverpool are aware of the opportunity and have been in discussions about the deal. They know all the details regarding Mamardashvili.

“It’s now up to Liverpool to decide whether they want to pay around €30m (£25.7m) to sign Mamardashvili, loan him out, and see him as a future replacement for Alisson, or if they prefer to stick with their current goalkeepers.

“Importantly, Mamardashvili is enthusiastic about the move. He is willing to join Liverpool, even if it means not playing immediately due to Alisson’s presence, with the possibility of becoming Liverpool’s goalkeeper in the future.”

If Liverpool can secure Giorgi Mamardashvili for the price mentioned by Romano, it would be a remarkable deal. According to Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old currently shares the highest market value among goalkeepers worldwide (with Porto’s Diogo Costa), set at €45m (£38.5m), which is 50% more than the quoted amount.

Having starred in Georgia’s run to the knockout stages of Euro 2024, including a notable performance with 11 saves in a 1-1 draw against Czechia, Mamardashvili has demonstrated his ability on a big stage. Securing him for just over £25m would be a bargain in today’s market.

As a potential long-term successor to Alisson Becker, Mamardashvili seems to be one of the best options available. Given his age, he could secure the position for many years, similar to Alisson.

However, acquiring the Valencia goalkeeper would likely push Caoimhin Kelleher out of Liverpool. The 25-year-old has already had to be very patient for opportunities due to Alisson’s exceptional form and has indicated he may not want to remain a backup for much longer.

Liverpool wouldn’t sign Mamardashvili to be a benchwarmer, especially if they plan to loan him out until Alisson leaves. Such a move would suggest that Kelleher isn’t seen as the future number one, despite his solid performances when called upon by Jurgen Klopp.

It would be disappointing to lose Kelleher, but Mamardashvili would be a significant asset to the squad. It appears there is a genuine chance to acquire the impressive 23-year-old goalkeeper.
