Liverpool could be set to finally make a signing after Fabrizio Romano claimed a deal is “on” for a new addition.
Supporters of the Merseyside club are feeling exasperated after the team did not sign any new players this summer, making them the only Premier League team to have yet to make a signing. The club had been attempting to acquire Martin Zubimendi, a midfielder from Real Sociedad and Spain, who has a release clause of £51 million.
However, just as a deal seemed close to finalization, Zubimendi chose to remain with his boyhood club, despite having previously committed to Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes.
Despite appearing to lack depth in the defensive midfield position, Liverpool is not anticipated to have any alternative options in that role. Nonetheless, Romano indicates that the club is progressing towards securing a new addition.
After initially reporting that Liverpool were interested in signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for €30 million, it has now been confirmed that the deal is moving forward. Additionally, Nacho Sanchis of Relevo reports that Liverpool have upped their offer to €35 million, and Valencia owner Peter Lim is currently considering whether to accept the proposal.
With Alisson Becker remaining firmly as the number one goalkeeper, the Georgian international would not join Liverpool right away. Instead, it is reported that he would initially be loaned to Premier League side Bournemouth.
The 23-year-old is enthusiastic about the move, considering it “an opportunity of a lifetime.” However, El Chiringuito reports that Liverpool’s initial offer for the former Dinamo Tbilisi goalkeeper has been rejected, as Valencia is seeking a higher fee. Mamardashvili, who joined Valencia permanently in 2021, has since become their regular goalkeeper.
He has missed only one La Liga match in two seasons and further bolstered his reputation with several standout performances for Georgia at the Euros this summer.
