Liverpool handed another devastating transfer blow as furious fans call out Richard Hughes

Liverpool fans are enraged over reports of yet another failed transfer and have expressed their frustration towards the club’s sporting director, Richard Hughes.

Last week, the Reds targeted Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as their primary acquisition. However, the 25-year-old chose to remain in Spain after his current club persuaded him to stay.

This was a significant setback for the Reds, who were actively seeking a midfielder and were prepared to activate Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause. In Spanish football, the buying club pays the release clause to the player, who then activates it with the selling club, making the transfer dependent on the player’s desire to move.

Reports now suggest that the Reds are no longer pursuing a midfielder after missing out on Zubimendi. They then focused on Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was reportedly priced at €40 million by his club.

A peculiar aspect of the deal involved Bournemouth paying a loan fee to Valencia to acquire Mamardashvili for two seasons, with the intention of making him a permanent Liverpool player afterward. However, this proposal now seems moot, as Tribuna Deportiva journalist Hector Gomez reports that the Reds did not meet Valencia’s asking price, leading to the collapse of the transfer.

Following the latest developments and the failure to secure Zubimendi, Liverpool fans have expressed their frustration with the club’s newly-appointed sporting director, Richard Hughes.

One fan commented, “Can we have a press conference for Richard Hughes instead of Slot? He needs to answer the questions right now.”

Another fan agreed, saying, “If Liverpool is making it clear that Arne Slot is ‘head coach’ and not ‘manager,’ why is he the one fielding questions about the lack of signings?”

A third fan remarked, “Arne Slot, as the coach, has done his job preparing the team for the new season. Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, however, have not done their part to strengthen the squad and support the coach.”

A fourth fan added, “I have to say, I’m not impressed with Richard Hughes so far.”
