Barcelona dressing room ‘source’ claims Ilkay Gundogan’s relationship with dressing room became ‘strained’ after he criticised one player

Ilkay Gundogan’s relationship with the Barcelona dressing room became ‘strained’ after he publicly criticised one of his teammates, according to a new report.

Ilkay Gundogan’s rapport with the Barcelona dressing room reportedly became strained after he publicly criticized teammate Ronald Araujo, according to a new report.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer after leaving Manchester City, was a key player under Xavi. He made 51 appearances across all competitions last season as Barcelona finished second in La Liga.

However, Gundogan is now linked with a potential move away from Barcelona. Following a meeting with new manager Hansi Flick, both parties are said to have agreed to part ways, as reported by Cadena SER. Despite Flick’s interest in retaining Gundogan and his comments suggesting a feeling that Gundogan might stay, the situation appears to have evolved, with Manchester City reportedly interested in bringing him back.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Gundogan’s relationship with his Barcelona teammates soured after he criticized Araujo’s red card in a Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain. Gundogan expressed his disappointment about the team’s performance and the red card, which he felt negatively impacted the game. This criticism reportedly led to some tension within the dressing room, and although Gundogan clarified his comments privately, some residual resentment remained.

The report also indicates that Gundogan’s “huge salary” is another factor contributing to the club’s desire for him to leave this summer, especially with new signings like Dani Olmo arriving.
