Fans stunned as Liverpool agree to sell another player to Brentford for ‘insane’ fee

Liverpool look set to sell another player this summer, and fans cannot believe the reported fee.

The 2024/25 summer transfer window has been relatively quiet for Liverpool, as they remain the only Premier League club yet to sign a new player.

In terms of departures, Liverpool has seen several squad members leave, including Fabio Carvalho, Thiago Alcantara, and Joel Matip over the summer.

Now, it seems another player might be on the way out, and Liverpool fans have voiced their opinions on the rumored transfer fee.

According to The Athletic’s football correspondent David Ornstein, Sepp van den Berg is nearing a move to Brentford from Liverpool for a fee exceeding £20 million.

The Dutch defender had a strong season with Bundesliga club Mainz, but Liverpool fans seem content with his departure, thanks to the fee secured by new sporting director Richard Hughes.

On X, one fan reacted, saying: “£20M for a player I’ve never heard of? That’s unbelievable.”

Another fan compared the deal to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s recent transfer to West Ham United from Manchester United, noting: “How is Liverpool selling him for a higher fee than AWB? That’s crazy.”

A more optimistic fan commended the club’s leadership, suggesting that the funds might be used for a new signing: “The brilliance of Michael Edwards in generating transfer fees for Liverpool… Hopefully, this, combined with the unused Caicedo/Lavia/Zubimendi funds, will be enough to bring in a top-tier player.”

Additionally, this wouldn’t be the first transaction between the two clubs this summer, as Portuguese talent Fabio Carvalho also moved to Brentford earlier this month for a reported £27.5 million.

This report follows closely on the heels of news that Liverpool is nearing their first signing under manager Arne Slot, with a deal for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili reportedly in its final stages.

The Georgian goalkeeper is expected to join Liverpool this summer but will remain on loan with his current club, Valencia, for the 2024/25 season, contrary to earlier rumors suggesting a potential loan to Bournemouth.
