Arsenal are reportedly working on a blockbuster signing which could give them a huge boost in their Premier League title ambitions.
After failing to displace Manchester City over the past two seasons, Arsenal’s only significant move so far has been the £42 million acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
They are expected to add Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, but there are also rumors that Arsenal might pursue a high-profile transfer before the window closes.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal may intensify their interest in Serie A and are “back on the trail” of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Although Arsenal’s interest in the Nigerian forward had waned, the Italian publication suggests they are reconsidering a move for him. Chelsea also admire Osimhen, and Paris Saint-Germain has made an offer for him.
Napoli initially held firm on Osimhen’s £111 million release clause, but the report indicates they might now accept £85 million for the 25-year-old.
The three-time Serie A champions are still negotiating with Chelsea to bring Romelu Lukaku to their team, but a deal has not yet been finalized.
Victor Osimhen is highly regarded as one of the top strikers, having netted 76 goals and provided 18 assists in 133 matches for Napoli.
As an alternative, Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, who scored 43 goals during a championship-winning season last year, is also being considered.
However, Sporting CP requires the full £85 million release clause to be met, which has deterred Arsenal from pursuing Gyokeres.
The North London club continues to prioritize acquiring a striker, as Eddie Nketiah is up for sale at the right price and Gabriel Jesus has faced difficulties since joining the Emirates Stadium. Last season, Kai Havertz was often used in a central role and began the new season with a goal and an assist in the match against Wolves last weekend.
