Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been highlighted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Despite this, Romano has recently downplayed the transfer rumors, noting that while Liverpool is interested, no formal offers have been made.
Guehi, who has impressed at Crystal Palace, has attracted interest from top clubs, including Newcastle United. However, Newcastle’s pursuit faces hurdles, especially following Palace’s recent sale of Joachim Andersen to Fulham. Palace may be reluctant to part with another key defender, which complicates Newcastle’s chances of signing Guehi.
Romano explained in his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside that Liverpool has been monitoring Guehi since February, but no official bids have been made. Liverpool values Guehi as a potential long-term replacement for the aging Virgil van Dijk, who is nearing the end of his career. Guehi could provide vital stability and continuity in Liverpool’s defense.
Romano also highlighted Newcastle’s ongoing interest, but negotiations are challenging due to Palace’s reduced defensive options after recent player departures. The potential loss of Guehi could further weaken Palace’s squad, making them more determined to keep him.
As the transfer window nears its end, Palace might be more inclined to retain Guehi, complicating any potential deal with Liverpool or Newcastle. Liverpool is also considering alternative options, such as Goncalo Inacio, to reinforce their defense. The urgency is high, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool can secure the necessary reinforcements before the transfer deadline.
