Pique speak ang.rily about Laporta decision

The two individuals had previously lived in the same building in Manchester and share a close personal bond off the field.

Gündogan, who recently announced his retirement from the German national team, played over 300 matches for Manchester City between 2016 and 2023. During his initial time with City, he won 12 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and one Champions League.

City had hoped to retain him last summer, but he left on a free transfer after rejecting several contract offers and interest from Arsenal to join Barcelona.

Last season, Gündogan made 51 appearances across all competitions but was allowed to leave to help address the club’s financial challenges, particularly after the signing of attacking midfielder Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig.

Piqué praised İlkay Gündoğan after his departure from Barcelona, noting that Gündoğan joined the club on a free transfer and persuaded Manchester City to let him leave in pursuit of his childhood dream. During his time at Barcelona, Gündoğan set records for the most assists in a season and the most key passes in Europe, surpassing players like Kroos and De Bruyne.

When he witnessed Araújo’s error against Paris, Gündoğan spoke out publicly, demonstrating his deep love for Barcelona. Faced with the club’s financial difficulties, he chose to leave quietly to help Barcelona register Dani Olmo. He even forfeited the final two years of his contract as a gesture of support during the financial crisis.

Piqué emphasized that Gündoğan was both a legendary player and captain, and his dedication will be remembered by fans and the club forever. His exceptional year at Barcelona will be cherished as if it lasted a decade.
