Ilkay Gundogan’s wife has made her feelings clear on the Germany midfielder re-joining Manchester City.
Gundogan finalized his return to Manchester City from Barcelona on Friday, signing a one-year contract with an option for an additional year.
The 33-year-old left City on a free transfer last summer after his contract ended and joined Barcelona. However, due to Barcelona’s financial issues, which are affecting their ability to register new players like Dani Olmo for La Liga, they decided to let him go.
Gundogan’s wife, Sara Arfaoui, may not have been too upset about his move last year. Despite her emotional farewell to Manchester, Arfaoui criticized the city’s food scene in October 2022. On Instagram, she complained about the lack of good dining options, saying, “I tried so hard to find a good restaurant but everywhere had horrible food. I couldn’t find real Italian or good sushi, just frozen food everywhere. Restaurants here seem more focused on drinks and shots like nightclubs, rather than quality food. Maybe London has better options, but Manchester doesn’t. I’m sorry.”

However, with the couple moving back to Manchester for at least the 2024/25 season, Arfaoui has taken a more positive tone, posting on Instagram: “Back home with the people we love.”
Gundogan echoed this sentiment, expressing his happiness about returning to City. He noted the overwhelmingly positive reception he received, stating, “It feels just so nice to be home… I’m just happy to be here right now.”
