One Liverpool player has learned of his punishment after being involved in a large-scale fracas a few weeks ago.
On the night Uruguayâs Copa America hopes were dashed by Colombia in the semi-finals in early July, Darwin Nunez was seen confronting a group of spectators who had approached threateningly near where the Uruguayan playersâ families were seated.
According to South American outlet Pases Uruguay, CONMEBOL has imposed a five-match ban on the Liverpool forward, along with a $20,000 (ÂŁ15,000) fine for his actions. Four of his teammates have also received suspensions and fines, but of a lesser magnitude than the 25-year-old.
David Lynch clarified on X that Nunezâs suspension will only apply to international matches, so it will not affect his participation with Liverpool.
Although the five-game ban is a significant personal setback for Nunez, it might actually benefit Liverpool. Uruguay has two sets of World Cup qualifying double headers in September and October, during which Nunez will be unavailable. This means he will stay on Merseyside instead of making four transatlantic trips this autumn, allowing him to prepare for Liverpool’s matches after those international breaks.
Meanwhile, his attacking teammates at Anfield are likely to be away with their national teams, such as Luis Diaz heading to South America. Therefore, Arne Slot will likely be pleased that his number 9 wonât be traveling.
By the time the latter international window arrives, Liverpool will have played seven matches in 22 days, including the start of the expanded Champions League. As a result, having Nunez refreshed and ready could be highly advantageous for the team ahead of their clash against Chelsea on October 19.
This added freshness might allow him to shine for Liverpool in the autumn and possibly lead to a scoring streak that silences his persistent critics.
