Chelsea insert clause into Jadon Sancho deal that could see them avoid having to buy player next summer

Chelsea have reportedly inserted a clause into Jadon Sancho’s loan deal that could prevent them from having to buy the Englishman.

Since his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United in 2021, Jadon Sancho has struggled to reach his full potential.

The 24-year-old’s public disagreement with manager Erik ten Hag has thrown his future at the club into uncertainty.

On transfer deadline day, it was confirmed that Sancho would leave Manchester United to spend the 2024/25 season on loan at Chelsea.

According to the BBC, the loan deal includes an obligation for Chelsea to make the transfer permanent next summer, with a fee between £20 million and £25 million.

However, a clause in the deal could impact Chelsea’s plans. The Telegraph’s James Ducker reports that Chelsea must buy Sancho if they finish in the Premier League’s top 14. If Chelsea ends up 15th or lower, it could complicate their ability to secure Sancho permanently.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on social media: “Jadon Sancho, Chelsea, and Manchester United have completed all paperwork, making the deal 100% finalized. The loan includes an obligation to buy if Chelsea finishes in the top 14 of the Premier League. The fee will be between £20 million and £25 million, based on performance-related add-ons.”

After Jadon Sancho’s arrival at Chelsea, winger Raheem Sterling has moved to Arsenal on loan, joining their London rivals.

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu Gaspar, explained the decision: “Honestly, we didn’t plan to sign him at the start of the transfer window, but we always stay prepared for any scenario. When the opportunity arose, I assessed the squad, reviewed his playing style, and consulted with Mikel [Arteta] and Tim [Lewis], our vice-chairman, to ensure everyone was comfortable with this move.

“Bringing him in makes a lot of sense. He has valuable experience, understands the league well, and has played in the Champions League multiple times. With several Premier League titles to his name, I believe he will significantly benefit our squad, and I’m excited to have him on board.”
