Scott McTominay’s former Man Utd teammate takes to social media to tell club they’ve made a mistake selling him

A former teammate of Scott McTominay has publicly questioned Manchester United’s decision to offload the Scotland international this summer.

Scott McTominay, who joined Manchester United at age five, completed a £25 million transfer to Napoli on Friday following weeks of speculation. The 27-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Serie A club.

Erik ten Hag expressed mixed feelings about the move, saying, “I am very happy for him, but it’s a case of mixed emotions because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him. He embodies Manchester United, having been with us for over 22 years. Unfortunately, that’s the way it is.”

Ten Hag further commented, “Homegrown players add significant value, which makes the situation less ideal. Nevertheless, it’s a good deal for everyone involved—Scott is happy, and so are Napoli and we.”

After the transfer was confirmed, McTominay’s former teammate Nemanja Matic shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). Matic, who played with McTominay at Old Trafford for five years and has long been an admirer of his, had previously offered to mentor him. In 2020, Matic said, “Scott knows I am always available if he needs advice; he’s still learning. I’m pleased with his progress and believe he will be crucial for Manchester United in the future.”

Now, four years later, Matic has criticized United’s decision to let McTominay go. “In my opinion, #manutd made a mistake by selling Scott McTominay,” he wrote. “Replacing a player like him is difficult. [Antonio] Conte is a smart man.”

McTominay is excited about the new challenge awaiting him in Naples. Reflecting on his time with Manchester United, he expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Whenever my career ends, I’ll look back on my time at Manchester United with great appreciation. I’ve been here since I was five years old, and I am truly thankful to have been part of its history as a young player.”

He continued, “I wanted to convey my love for the club because I’ve cherished every moment here. I’m grateful to the players, coaching staff, managers, and fans, as I wouldn’t be where I am today without them and my family. Now, I’m embarking on a new chapter in Italy and look forward to embracing this new journey.”

McTominay also reflected on his career progression, stating, “If you had told me seven years ago, as I joined the first team, that I’d be in this position today, having shared memorable moments with my family at Old Trafford and beyond, I would have eagerly accepted.”

He added, “I’ve absolutely loved my time here, and now I’m ready for a new challenge. I’m eager to embrace it and tackle it head-on. I’ve always supported the club and want to see them succeed and do well.”
