Man Utd flop axed by Erik ten Hag last year after training ground bust-up terminates contract with new club

A Manchester United flop that fell out of favour with Erik ten Hag has had the contract signed with his new club terminated a year after joining.

Since Erik ten Hag took over as United’s manager in April 2022, he has overseen the departure of several high-profile players.

One of the most notable exits was Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Old Trafford dramatically after a fallout with Ten Hag, just 15 months after rejoining the club. While Ronaldo later found success with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, it has now been reported that Alex Telles, another player who left under Ten Hag’s management, has also been released by his new club.

Telles joined Al Nassr last July for £4 million and was given a contract worth approximately £7 million per year. However, just over a year later, his contract has been terminated by mutual agreement. Despite making 38 appearances for Al Nassr, Telles has been released as manager Luis Castro does not see him as part of the team’s future plans.

With his contract terminated, Telles is now a free agent and can negotiate with other clubs, several of which are reportedly interested. During his time at United, Telles struggled for regular playing time, making only 50 appearances over three years.

In his final season, Telles was on loan at La Liga club Sevilla, where he made 38 appearances during the 2022/23 season, contributing to their Europa League victory.

Ten Hag was already hesitant about Telles, and a reported altercation with teammate Hannibal Mejbri was reportedly the tipping point that led to his departure from Manchester United three years after joining from Porto for £13.6 million.

Following Telles’s sale, Manchester United issued a statement on their website: “We’d like to thank Alex for his contributions over the past three years and wish him the best for the future.”
