A forgotten Liverpool starlet who cost £2 million at the age of 14 has recently signed for his 10th club.
Winger Oluwaseyi Babajide Ojo, commonly known as Sheyi Ojo, began his career at Milton Keynes Dons before moving to Liverpool for a reported £2 million when he was just 14.
Soon after joining Liverpool, Ojo was loaned to Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He made his Premier League debut under Jurgen Klopp in March 2016, during a 3-2 loss at Southampton.
Despite the early hype, Ojo struggled to meet expectations. He had subsequent loan spells at Fulham, Stade de Reims, Rangers, Cardiff City, and Millwall.
After making 13 appearances and scoring once for Liverpool, he left on a free transfer to Cardiff. Ojo again struggled for a regular spot and was loaned to Belgian side K.V. Kortrijk for the 2023/24 season.
In June, he left Cardiff following the end of his contract. At 27, Ojo recently signed a two-year deal with Slovenian club Maribor.
In his career so far, Sheyi Ojo has made 258 club appearances and scored 23 goals.
On the international front, Ojo was part of the England U20 team that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. He provided two assists in the semi-final against Italy and came on as a substitute in the final, which England won 1-0 against Venezuela thanks to a goal by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
In 2020, Ojo shared that Jurgen Klopp’s main advice before his loan to Cardiff was to ensure he played consistently. Ojo noted, “The main message was just to get consistent games. Every time I’ve had a loan spell, I’ve had games where I’ve performed well. But the key is playing regularly and having a full season of football.”
