Manchester United legend Paul Scholes didn’t hesitate when naming his greatest team-mate.
Scholes spent his entire club career at Manchester United, where he was one of the six ‘Class of 92’ players who made it to the first team without a loan spell. During his initial time at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, he won an impressive 24 trophies before retiring in 2011. He made a comeback a year later, securing his 11th Premier League title. Over his career, Scholes played alongside football greats such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Denis Irwin. However, when asked about his greatest ever teammate, Scholes named Ryan Giggs as his top choice. “It’s an easy decision,” Scholes told MUTV in 2020. “I had the chance to play with many exceptional players, and as a midfielder, I always felt that wide players and number 10s were crucial for winning games. My connection with players like Teddy Sheringham and Dwight Yorke was particularly special.”
I spent a season playing as a No. 10 for part of the time and also on the left side due to Giggsy’s injury, alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy. I really enjoyed that, as having that connection with a teammate means understanding each other’s intentions.
“That’s what makes a good team,” I suppose.
Like Scholes, Giggs was also part of the ‘Class of 92’ and has set numerous records for both Manchester United and the Premier League. He holds the Premier League record for the most assists with 162 and has made 963 appearances for United, more than any other player in the club’s history.
Giggs retired in 2014 at the age of 40, ending a 24-year playing career.
