Girona Confirms Summer Bid for Barcelona’s €20M-Rated Eric Garcia

In a recent media interaction, Girona’s sporting director, Quique Carcel, revealed that the club had officially sought to sign Barcelona defender Eric Garcia during the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old, who was on loan at Girona last season, was crucial to their impressive top-four finish in La Liga.

There was considerable speculation about Garcia returning to Girona over the summer, especially as Barcelona struggled to register Dani Olmo. However, due to injuries within Barcelona’s squad, coach Hansi Flick prevented Garcia’s departure, ensuring he remained at Camp Nou.

Carcel discussed Girona’s interest in Garcia, stating, “We wanted Eric back because he would have strengthened our squad and improved the coach’s tactical plans. He would have been a key signing, which is why we approached Barcelona.”

Despite Girona’s efforts, the transfer did not go through. Carcel noted Barcelona’s unwillingness to let the defender leave, saying, “I believe they didn’t want him to go. They understand the situation better. We tried, but it wasn’t feasible.”

Regarding other transfers, Girona managed to secure Oriol Romeu on loan from Barcelona, while Pau Victor moved to Barcelona following a successful loan at Barça Atletic.

Carcel expressed his satisfaction with Romeu’s return, highlighting his importance to Girona. He said, “Oriol has always been vital for us, both on and off the pitch. After his time at Barcelona, we followed his situation closely and knew he could be valuable to us again. His eagerness to return was key to finalizing the deal.”

On Pau Victor, Carcel commented, “Pau had an offer from Barcelona’s first team, and he wanted to accept it. I’m pleased for him after his excellent season last year.”

Barcelona and Girona will face each other this weekend at Montilivi, but Romeu will be unable to play due to a ‘fear clause’ in his loan agreement.
