Kylian Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid this summer, brought an end to the long-running speculation that began in 2017. However, he nearly signed with Liverpool before moving to Madrid. According to L’Equipe, this situation unfolded in the summer of 2022 when Mbappé sought to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) shortly after renewing his contract with the club, which effectively closed the door on a move to Real Madrid. The French media reported that Real Madrid had submitted an offer after learning of Mbappé’s intention to leave PSG, but it was ignored by the Parisian club. Liverpool also made a 200 million euro offer, which was presented to Antero Henrique, the negotiator for PSG. However, Mbappé reportedly demanded double that amount to consider the move, which is why the transfer to Liverpool did not materialize.
L’Equipe confirms that Mbappé had reached a preliminary agreement with Liverpool for a short-term contract, which would have allowed him to move to Real Madrid later. Ultimately, with PSG rejecting Liverpool’s offer, Mbappé stayed in Paris.
