Ahead of the North London Derby, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta discussed his plans for young talent Ethan Nwaneri.
Arteta mentioned that Ethan Nwaneri, the 17-year-old midfield sensation, could feature in this Sunday’s eagerly awaited North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Nwaneri, who made history as the youngest Premier League player when he substituted in against Brentford almost two years ago, has continued to attract attention since then.
Due to interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, Ethan Nwaneri signed a long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this year after impressing in their youth system. His standout performances during Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the United States further caught the eye of Arteta and his coaching staff.
Arsenal is currently struggling in midfield due to injuries to key players Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino, as well as Declan Rice’s suspension. Arteta hinted that Nwaneri might be given a chance in the crucial North London derby. When discussing potential lineup changes, Arteta remained optimistic about integrating Nwaneri.
When asked about Nwaneri’s chances of playing, Arteta stated, “We have to adapt to team changes. These situations will be part of our season.” He noted that the squad for the Brighton match had changed unexpectedly from their initial expectations. Despite the summer departures of players like Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira, Arteta expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities and defended the decisions made.
“Yes, we could have had more, but we are aware of our limits,” Arteta said. “Some moves were necessary, and some players needed new opportunities. Although the team is different from before, I’m very pleased with its current level.”
Arteta acknowledged the timing of recent setbacks as unfortunate but remained hopeful for the remainder of the season. “Some things are beyond our control, and the last two weeks have been very unlucky. We have to deal with it, but I hope things will improve as the season progresses.”
