Liverpool may have another opportunity to sign a player they were very interested in during the summer. Yvonne Gabriel from Bild reported on the FC Bayern Insider podcast that Paris Saint-Germain plans to sell Xavi Simons next year. Currently on loan at RB Leipzig, Simons is likely too costly for them due to his €80 million (£67.4 million) price tag.
Gabriel noted that the Premier League is Simons’ “dream destination” and that Liverpool had a strong interest in him during the last transfer window. He shares a good rapport with compatriot Arne Slot, who is also at Leipzig. Simons reportedly turned down Manchester United’s offer, believing he had better chances for development at Leipzig, while Manchester City could be an option given Kevin De Bruyne’s expiring contract.
With Leipzig unlikely to buy Simons outright and PSG eager to sell, Liverpool could pursue him if they truly want him. Simons had an impressive season with Leipzig, contributing 10 goals and 15 assists, surpassing the performance of Dominik Szoboszlai at Anfield.
His performance metrics place him among the top 1% of attacking midfielders in Europe for shots, shot-creating actions, progressive carries, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes. However, his disciplinary record raises concerns, as he received 10 yellow cards and one red last season, while Szoboszlai was booked only once.
Currently, Liverpool might not need Simons, especially with Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott returning from injury soon. However, if Simons performs well at Leipzig before January, it could encourage Liverpool to consider a serious approach for him in 2025, particularly if gaps arise in Slot’s squad.
