Raheem Sterling made Champions League history on Thursday night after coming on during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Atalanta.
Arsenal’s 2024/25 Champions League campaign began on a disappointing note, as they played to a goalless draw against last season’s Europa League winners, Atalanta.
The match was tense throughout, with the key moment occurring when Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made a spectacular double save after Atalanta was awarded a penalty early in the second half.
Despite the draw, one Arsenal player made history: Raheem Sterling became the first player to participate in the Champions League for four different English clubs. Coming on as a substitute for Bukayo Saka in the 73rd minute, Sterling has now played in the competition for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal during his 12-year career.
The 29-year-old completed his move to Arsenal on deadline day of the summer transfer window, joining from Chelsea on a season-long loan.
“It’s an incredible feeling and really exciting,” Sterling said. “We left it a bit late, but this is the move I was hoping for.
“Considering everything, I feel like this is a perfect fit for me, and I’m thrilled we made it happen.”
