Barcelona approach retired Premier League star to replace key player who is out for the season with devastating injury

New reports have revealed that Barcelona have made a shock approach for a retired player to try and bring them to the club to replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

On Sunday, reports emerged that Ter Stegen would be sidelined for several months due to a knee injury. In his absence, Iñaki Peña is expected to step in, although he hasn’t impressed in previous appearances for Barcelona.

Now, it’s been revealed that Barcelona is attempting to lure a top goalkeeper out of retirement to fill the gap left by the injured German keeper. Polish journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk has confirmed that the club has reached out to Wojciech Szczesny, noting, “According to our information, Barcelona has indeed made contact with the Pole. However, it’s too early to determine the outcome of these discussions. The case is open; Szczesny is at least considering a return to the game.”

With the summer transfer window closed and the next not reopening until January 1, Barcelona must explore free agents for an immediate replacement. Szczesny reportedly stands out as their preferred option among available players. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano later confirmed this, stating on X that Szczesny’s agents have been approached by Barcelona to discuss possible terms. Although Szczesny announced his retirement this summer, Barcelona is eager to understand his current situation.

Wojciech Szczesny announced his retirement on August 27 after mutually terminating his contract with Juventus, leaving as a free agent. The 34-year-old goalkeeper spent seven years with the Serie A club, making 252 appearances.

Recent reports indicate that Barcelona is looking to bring Szczesny out of retirement to replace the injured Marc-AndrĂ© ter Stegen. Following Ter Stegen’s knee injury, Iñaki Peña is expected to take over, despite his previous lack of impressive performances.

Polish journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk confirmed Barcelona’s interest in Szczesny, stating that discussions have taken place, but it’s too early to predict the outcome. He noted that Szczesny is at least considering a return to football.

With the summer transfer window closed and the next opening not until January 1, Barcelona must look at free agents for an immediate replacement, and Szczesny is seen as a prime candidate. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano later reported that Szczesny’s agents have been approached to discuss potential terms. Other options include Keylor Navas.

Szczesny received a guard of honor after his retirement announcement, reflecting his status as a club legend at both Juventus and Arsenal, where he made 181 appearances. Upon retiring, he expressed a desire to focus on family, stating, “I gave the game 18 years of my life… my heart is not there anymore.”
