A former Real Madrid goalkeeper has been linked with a shock move to FC Barcelona.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen sustained a knee injury during Sunday’s 5-1 La Liga victory against Villarreal, likely rupturing the patella tendon in his right knee.
Manager Hansi Flick is considering a short-term goalkeeper signing to cover for their injured captain.
Amid speculation about potential replacements, reports suggest that Keylor Navas, a former player for Real Madrid, has made himself available.
Navas, 37, recently left PSG after a summer stint seeking new opportunities, and his loan to Nottingham Forest did not lead to a permanent transfer, leaving him as a free agent.
He has been training with his first club, Saprissa, in Costa Rica. Navas is reportedly interested in a move to Barcelona and is awaiting contact from the club.
Flick commented on Ter Stegen’s injury, noting that the disappointment overshadowed their victory.
“The fans who watched on TV and those in the stadium witnessed an incredible game,” Flick reflected on Sunday.
He praised the team’s speed and dynamics but expressed sadness for Ter Stegen, one of their captains.
Flick noted that Villarreal is a tough opponent, emphasizing their strong performance and the need to maintain that level.
Ter Stegen has faced criticism from fans for a mistake in last week’s Champions League match against Monaco but has made over 400 appearances for Barcelona since joining in 2014.
He became captain in December 2022 after Gerard Piqué’s retirement and shares a strong working relationship with Flick, who took over as coach earlier this summer.
