Arne Slot may have finally found a solution to Liverpool’s midfield problem after missing out on Martin Zubimendi in the transfer window.
Liverpool has started the season impressively, winning six out of seven matches across all competitions and conceding only three goals. However, they still appear to lack depth in midfield after missing out on Real Sociedad’s Zubimendi during the summer transfer window.
Now, manager Slot might have identified an ideal player to integrate into his system and help Liverpool secure their first trophy under his leadership. According to respected German journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool is exploring a move for Merlin Rohl from FC Freiburg.
The Reds have reportedly been impressed by Rohl after their scouts observed him in live matches. Freiburg holds Rohl in high regard and has offered the 22-year-old a new contract to deter interest from Liverpool.
Despite accepting the new deal, Rohl’s potential move to Anfield remains possible. After the announcement of his contract extension, he stated, “I trust in the environment here in Freiburg and am extremely grateful to everyone I work with daily — they’ve greatly contributed to my development over the last two years. My goal is to reach my full potential, and SC Freiburg provides the ideal surroundings for that.”
One challenge Liverpool may encounter in pursuing Rohl is that he is currently recovering from a syndesmosis ligament tear, which will keep him sidelined for the short to medium term.
Overall, the midfielder has played 40 matches for Freiburg, scoring three goals and providing five assists.
“Merlin has shown positive development at the highest level, just as we had hoped. He has demonstrated his skills and football intelligence in various positions and is a crucial part of our team,” stated Jochen Saier, Freiburg’s board member for sport.
