Liverpool has received a significant boost ahead of their match against Wolves this Saturday, as Alisson Becker is set to return from a minor injury and reclaim his position in goal.
The Brazilian goalkeeper missed the last two games due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the opening Champions League match against AC Milan. However, Alisson has returned to full training and participated in Friday’s session with the team, just in time for the Wolves match.
Manager Arne Slot confirmed in the pre-match press conference that Alisson is fit to play at Molineux. His return is crucial for Liverpool, as he has been a key player in their recent successes.
“We believe he is ready to play,” Slot stated. “He trained with the group yesterday, and we expect him to participate fully in today’s session.”
While Slot is pleased with Alisson’s return, he also praised Caoimhin Kelleher, who filled in during Alisson’s absence. “We’re really happy to have Alisson back, but I want to acknowledge that Caoimhin performed well in the two games he played for us,” Slot noted. “This highlights the quality options we have in certain positions.”
Despite Alisson’s return being a positive for Liverpool, it raises questions about Kelleher’s future at the club. Even though the 25-year-old played strongly in Alisson’s absence, it’s unlikely he will maintain his starting role now that Alisson is fit again. This could leave Kelleher frustrated, having shown his capabilities.
Given his age and desire for more regular first-team action, this situation might suggest it’s time for him to seek a move away from Anfield. With Alisson firmly established as Liverpool’s number one, Kelleher may struggle to find consistent playing time in the future.
Several clubs may be interested in signing Kelleher, knowing he has proven himself at a high level. Additionally, with Giorgi Mamardashvili reportedly set to join Liverpool next summer, Kelleher’s opportunities could become even more limited. This season might very well be his last with Liverpool as he looks for a new challenge.
