Liverpool handed double injury blow ahead of Bologna clash as Sky Sports reporter drops update on key player

Liverpool will be without two key players for their Champions League clash with Bologna on Wednesday evening.

Arne Slot will oversee his first European match as Liverpool manager against the Serie A team, aiming to build on the Reds’ recent victory against AC Milan two weeks ago.

Currently, the Italian side sits 13th in Serie A, having recently drawn with Atalanta, the team that eliminated Liverpool from last year’s Europa League.

Bologna finished fifth last season under Thiago Motta, but his departure to Juventus, along with the loss of key players like Joshua Zirkzee, has weakened their squad.

Liverpool will be without key player Diogo Jota, while Federico Chiesa is also sidelined. However, defender Andrew Robertson, who limped off in the match against Wolves, and Darwin Nunez are expected to return, providing a boost for the manager.

Sky Sports journalist Vinnie O’Connor reported, “Andy Robertson is out there training. There was some concern after the Wolves game about a possible injury.”

Regarding Nunez, he added, “The good news is Darwin Nunez is back in training after missing the Wolves game due to illness.”

However, he confirmed Jota’s absence: “Diogo Jota won’t be out there right now due to a foot injury. We’ve been told his scan was clear, but he’s not training today.”

There remains a chance that he could play against Bologna, but it seems more likely that Darwin Nunez will get the opportunity to start.

Nunez has been on the bench recently, as Slot has preferred to use Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, and Jota in attack. Cody Gakpo has also seen limited playing time, despite his strong performance, including a brace against West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

The only other player unavailable is Harvey Elliott, who is expected to be out for a while due to a foot fracture he sustained last month. His return is anticipated after the autumn international break.
