Lionel Messi often turned to Andres Iniesta during challenging moments on the field, illustrating why Iniesta was such an exceptional teammate.
At 40, Iniesta is set to announce his retirement from football on October 8, the date associated with his iconic shirt number. Reports from the Spanish outlet Relevo indicate that the former Spain international has been in Dubai with his family, training and staying fit while seeking new opportunities.
Just weeks ago, Iniesta expressed a desire to continue playing, stating, “I want to keep going until I feel it’s time to stop.” However, it appears his distinguished career is nearing its end this month.
Iniesta will be fondly remembered not only for his goal in the 2010 World Cup final but also for his 22 years at Barcelona, where he played alongside legends like Messi. The Argentine reflected on their close bond and Iniesta’s remarkable abilities in *The Artist: Being Iniesta*.
“I always picture him with the ball at his feet,” Messi noted. “That’s how I’ve always seen him. He plays with such simplicity. It may seem like he’s not doing much, but he orchestrates everything. The hardest part of football is making it all look effortless, and that’s what Andrés excels at.”
Messi recounted how he would ask Iniesta to be near him during tough times in a match. “When the pressure rises, I prefer him close by. I tell him, ‘Come closer, I want you beside me.’ He steps up and guides the team. In finals, Andrés, Xavi, Busquets, and I always wanted to unite to gain an advantage and control the match.”
He also recalled, “We’ve had many joyful moments, particularly a heartfelt embrace at the Bernabeu after scoring. That gesture from him was truly special.”
