BARCELONAThree reasons why Barcelona should avoid signing Neymar in 2025

Speculation is increasing about Neymar potentially returning to Barcelona in the summer of 2025. Reports suggest that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is planning a significant signing to celebrate the club’s return to the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou, and Neymar has emerged as a candidate.

Although Erling Haaland from Manchester City is viewed as the primary target, Neymar’s upcoming contract expiration with Al-Hilal makes his return seem plausible. However, there are compelling reasons for Barcelona to reconsider re-signing the Brazilian star.

**Injury Concerns**

Neymar’s long history of injuries raises significant concerns. Since joining Al-Hilal in 2023, he has only played five times due to a severe ACL injury. His time at PSG was similarly troubled; for example, he missed 33 games in the 2018/19 season due to injuries and was sidelined for 76 days during the 2021/22 season with an ankle issue, missing 15 matches. The following season, ankle surgery kept him out for 130 days, resulting in 17 missed games. Given his inconsistent availability, Neymar would be a risky acquisition for Barcelona, which needs reliable players to strengthen their squad.

**Lack of Fit in the Current Squad**

Neymar’s preferred position on the left flank is already occupied by key players like Ferran Torres and Raphinha. Raphinha, in particular, has been performing well under coach Hansi Flick. Bringing Neymar back would complicate the team’s selection process and could hinder the development of younger talents if he were to join, especially with Barcelona also considering signing Nico Williams in 2025.

**Financial Constraints**

Another major obstacle to Neymar’s return is his hefty salary, reportedly around €100 million annually at Al-Hilal—significantly more than his previous earnings at PSG. Given Barcelona’s financial difficulties, which have required them to offload players and lower wages, accommodating Neymar’s salary would strain their budget. Even if he were willing to take a pay cut, his wages would likely remain too high for the club.

**Conclusion**

While some fans may be enthusiastic about Neymar’s possible return, it would not be a prudent decision for Barcelona. His injury issues, lack of a defined role in the squad, and overwhelming salary make him a poor fit for a club focused on financial stability and future development. For these reasons, it is clear that Barcelona would be better off without re-signing Neymar in 2025.
