Liverpool could soon hand Erik Ten Hag some more bad news in the transfer market.
The Manchester United manager is under significant pressure at Old Trafford and has faced criticism for several of his player acquisitions.
Ten Hag approved an £85 million transfer for Antony, who has netted only 12 goals for the club so far. Mason Mount, who joined in the summer of 2023, has struggled with both form and fitness.
Additionally, United has lacked a first-choice left back for much of the past two seasons due to Tyrell Malacia’s long-term absence and Luke Shaw’s ongoing injuries.
Despite this, United sold left back Alvaro Carreras to Benfica over the summer for £5 million.
Now, just five months after his departure, Liverpool is reportedly interested in bringing the 21-year-old back to the Premier League.
Carreras was highly regarded in United’s Academy and won the U23 Player of the Year award in 2022.
Although he never made a senior appearance for the first team, he was included on the bench for a Premier League match.
According to AS, Liverpool is the most interested party in Carreras as they seek a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson.
Manchester United reportedly has a buyback clause for Carreras, which could allow them to prevent a move to Anfield for their former player.
However, selling him too soon might become another costly error in the transfer market for United and Ten Hag.
Under Ten Hag’s management, United has invested over £700 million in new players, yet they remain far behind, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League after seven matches.
While Carreras excels at Benfica, Ten Hag could be facing another defensive injury crisis.
In addition to Shaw and Malacia, Harry Maguire and summer signing Noussair Mazraoui are also sidelined. This situation might force Victor Lindelof to take on a full-back role when club football resumes next weekend.
United will host Brentford on Saturday, a match Ten Hag is eager to win to relieve some of the pressure on his position.
