The Young Gun series is set to return for the 2024/25 season, highlighting the talented academy players at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. Samuel Onyekachukwu recently discussed his path from Finchley to a promising football career.
Growing up in Finchley, Samuel was inspired by his older brother’s love for the game. While he initially explored athletics due to his speed, his passion for football blossomed around age eight. With Nigerian heritage and Italian roots from his grandmother, Samuel’s diverse background has significantly shaped his identity on and off the field.
He names Virgil van Dijk as a major influence, admiring the Dutch defender’s excellence and reliability. “I aim to achieve that same level of impact on the pitch,” he notes, highlighting his goals as a centre-back.
Samuel’s football career began with Whetstone Wanderers, where he started as a winger before catching the eye of scouts at a summer tournament. Following a successful trial with Watford, he switched to centre-back, a change that allowed him to truly excel.
After two seasons with Watford at the U10 level, Samuel’s skills stood out during a tournament at Arsenal, where his team clinched the cup. This success led to an invitation to join Arsenal’s U12 squad, where he continues to thrive alongside familiar teammates.
Reflecting on his time at Arsenal, Samuel says, “Being part of one of the biggest clubs in the world is an honor.” A standout moment in his young career was a tour to Brazil with the U17s, where he showcased his talent and embraced the local culture.
As scholarship decisions approached, Samuel faced doubts due to a prior injury, but the faith of his coaches inspired him, resulting in a successful offer. He describes his transition to the Sobha Realty Training Centre as transformative, appreciating the professional setting and the chance to train with first-team players like William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard.
Samuel recalls a memorable experience with Saka in the ice bath, where they bonded over their journeys. Saka’s encouragement about self-confidence resonated with him.
Recently, Samuel made his U18 debut in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Southampton, demonstrating resilience after joining the game while the team was behind. The support from his teammates enhanced his performance, showcasing the squad’s determination.
Motivated by academy players’ appearances in the Carabao Cup, Samuel is eager to work hard for a spot in the first team. His faith is central to his life, providing strength and guidance through daily prayers and Bible reading.
He recognizes his family’s unwavering support, especially from his mother, who has been his biggest motivator. Her encouragement and prayers have deeply impacted his journey, and he aims to honor her sacrifices as he chases his football dreams.
