Liverpool boss Arne Slot has picked out one player who he thinks is a more logical fit as a striker than Darwin Nunez.
Dutchman Slot has made a strong start as Liverpool’s manager, with his team currently in second place in the Premier League. The Reds have also excelled in the Champions League, winning matches against AC Milan, Bologna, and RB Leipzig.
On Wednesday night, Liverpool will face Brighton and Hove Albion, aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Ahead of the match, Slot mentioned a surprising player he believes is a better option at the No. 9 position than Nunez. He noted, “It’s unfortunate that (Diogo) Jota isn’t available. Also, (Federico) Chiesa is out, as they were, in my view, the most suitable No. 9s, but we have other alternatives.”
Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus in the summer but has made just one start so far and is currently sidelined due to injury. In contrast, Nunez has played 10 times this season, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Regarding Nunez, Slot remarked, “I appreciate Darwin’s effort in recent weeks despite not playing much, which allowed him to compete in three consecutive matches. Playing three times in eight days speaks volumes about him and highlights the effectiveness of our performance and medical staff in preparing him properly.”
He added, “It’s essential for the player to fully commit. You can provide the right training sessions, but if he doesn’t put in the effort, it’s hard for him to perform as he has.
“Fortunately, his suspension from the Uruguay team was lifted, allowing him to play. That likely contributed to his strong performances in the last three matches. I’m referring to the intensity of his play, not just the quality, which was also impressive—so that’s a positive outcome.”
Nunez was able to represent his country during the international break after his original five-match ban was overturned.
