I’m ready to return to Old Trafford but only if my conditions are met. I’m sure the poet (Ruben Amorim) would be able to meet up to my expectations” – Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly “aspires to return” to Manchester United, driven by a strong connection with new manager Rúben Amorim. The Portuguese superstar, however, has set a specific condition for a potential January comeback, making fans wonder if this dream could become a reality.

Rumors have emerged suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo may be contemplating a dramatic return to Manchester United. If this happens, it would be motivated by his desire to rectify the circumstances surrounding his controversial exit and to leave a more positive legacy at Old Trafford. The speculation has gained further attention following the appointment of Rúben Amorim as United’s new manager, with some believing that their shared Portuguese heritage could facilitate a potential reunion.

Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United in early 2023 was marked by tension and public disputes, particularly his outspoken criticism of then-manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s operations. This created a rift that seemed irreparable at the time. Despite this, there are still those, including former United striker Louis Saha, who believe Ronaldo would welcome a chance for a third spell at the club. Saha suggests that Ronaldo’s competitive nature and desire for redemption could make a return appealing.

In an interview with Betfred, Saha expanded on Ronaldo’s mindset, focusing on his need for respect and a desire to feel valued:
“Cristiano would love the opportunity to return under conditions where he feels appreciated. Though he left on difficult terms, many fans and players understood his concerns. However, Amorim wouldn’t consider a move based solely on their relationship. It would only happen if Ronaldo could contribute significantly to the team.”

During his second spell at Manchester United, Ronaldo enjoyed a successful first season, scoring 24 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions. However, his time at the club was also marked by disciplinary issues and internal conflicts, leading to his mid-season departure to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. Since then, Ronaldo has excelled in Saudi Arabia, scoring an impressive 55 goals in just 56 games.

Nevertheless, despite his continued excellence, a return to Manchester United presents several challenges. Reports suggest that Amorim may face financial constraints due to the club’s heavy spending during Erik ten Hag’s time as manager. Additionally, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has recently taken on a significant role in United’s ownership, is prioritizing financial prudence over high-profile signings without long-term value. These factors cast doubt on whether a move for Ronaldo fits with the club’s current direction.

Despite these obstacles, the relationship between Amorim and Ronaldo seems based on mutual respect. After Amorim’s appointment, Ronaldo sent his best wishes to the new manager, commenting, “That’s what Manchester needs.” Amorim, in turn, acknowledged their lighthearted rapport, revealing that Ronaldo affectionately calls him “the poet” due to his passionate way of discussing football.

For now, the idea of Ronaldo returning to Manchester United remains an intriguing but uncertain possibility. Whether this reunion becomes a reality will depend on various factors, including the club’s financial limitations, its squad needs, and Ronaldo’s own goals. While challenges remain, the potential return of one of the club’s greatest players adds another layer of excitement to Manchester United’s evolving story.
