Liverpool fans feel Cody Gakpo may have aimed a slight dig at Jude Bellingham in his Instagram post.
Cody Gakpo, the Dutch forward, started on the bench for Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid on Wednesday night. He was substituted in for Darwin Nunez in the 68th minute and scored just under 10 minutes later to help secure a crucial 2-0 victory for Liverpool.
After the match, Gakpo shared a series of photos on Instagram, including one with Madrid’s Jude Bellingham. The caption read: “James 4:6. God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.”
On social media, some fans speculated that Gakpo’s post was aimed at Bellingham. One fan commented, “Jesus Christ Cody,” while another wrote, “Cooked him omd.” A third added, “Gakpo and Liverpool humbling Bellingham.
This picture is so cold.” Others reacted with similar comments, such as “Bellingham and Gakpo having beef wasn’t on my 2024 bingo card,” and “GAKPO COOKED BELLINGHAM!” One fan wondered what Bellingham had done to Gakpo or Liverpool to provoke such a message.
After the match, Bellingham reflected: “To be honest, they were more motivated than us. It’s a disappointing result against the best-performing team in Europe. There’s no shame in losing here, but we’re frustrated with how we played.”
He continued, “From the start, they took control of the game. We didn’t make the most of the possession we had. When we regained the ball, we tried to force too many counter-attacks.”
Bellingham added, “We gave the ball away so often that they were able to maintain control. Defensively, they kept us in a position where we couldn’t pose much of a threat.”
Liverpool will return to action this weekend, facing Manchester City in a highly anticipated Premier League showdown at Anfield.
