Virgil van Dijk gives shock Liverpool contract update that changes everything ahead of Man City clash

Virgil van Dijk has followed Mo Salah in giving a shock update on his Liverpool contract situation.

Last week, Salah made headlines when he openly spoke to the media after Liverpool’s victory over Southampton, revealing that he hasn’t received a contract offer and that he is “probably more out than in.”

Salah’s current contract expires in the summer, which means he can negotiate with foreign clubs starting in January if no agreement is reached before then.

In a viral video, Liverpool captain Van Dijk was spotted smirking as he walked by. However, he is in a similar situation. Ahead of Sunday’s crucial match against Manchester City, Van Dijk confirmed that there have been no updates on his contract negotiations.

He clarified that while discussions are ongoing with his agent, there’s nothing new to report.

“To be honest, no, there is no update, no news,” he said in an interview with Viaplay. “I don’t have anything to share. If you read reports saying agreements are made or not made, that’s not true. Everything has to align. Conversations are happening with the club and my agent, but for now, I have no news. I’m focused on playing football, I want to finish the season well, and we’ll see what next year brings.”

Van Dijk’s comments follow a report suggesting that a new contract for him is essentially a “formality,” with his agent telling interested clubs that Van Dijk is no longer available.

On Wednesday, a reporter questioned Van Dijk about his contract situation and suggested he should join his former opponents, Real Madrid, as they are in need of defenders due to injuries to David Alaba and Eder Militao.

Van Dijk responded, “Rüdiger is there?”

When the journalist pressed further, asking, “Maybe you at Real Madrid?” Van Dijk replied, “When?” The reporter then clarified, “In the summer.”

To which Van Dijk said, “Wow. I don’t know, the main focus for me is facing Man City.”

Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018 for £75 million, which was a world-record fee for a defender at the time. Since then, he has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup with the club.
