Man Utd fans think player’s time is up after Ruben Amorim’s ruthless decision

Manchester United fans were left baffled by Ruben Amorim’s team selection for his first Premier League home match as a key player did not make the squad – and they think his time at the club could be up.

Amorim, 39, received a warm welcome in his first Premier League home match as United’s manager.

As usual, fans were eager to see his team selection, and many were surprised when Joshua Zirkzee was chosen to start over Rasmus Højlund, who had scored twice in Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League win over Bodø/Glimt.

Amorim explained this decision as part of ‘squad rotation’ in his pre-match comments.

However, fans were further taken aback when Christian Eriksen was omitted from the matchday squad, despite having started in the previous Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town.

The Danish midfielder was left out of the 20-man squad for the Everton game, fueling speculation about his future.

Eriksen’s contract expires at the end of the season, and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that United are unwilling to offer him a new contract, potentially allowing him to leave as a free agent next summer.

The 32-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Scottish champions Celtic, but his high wages (£150,000 per week, according to Capology) may complicate negotiations.

Nevertheless, fans on social media quickly defended the former Inter player, with some even claiming he has been United’s ‘best player’ this season.

One fan commented, “No Eriksen in the squad is an absolute joke. He’s been our best player this season.”

Another added, “Eriksen has been arguably our player of the season, but Amorim barely includes him in the matchday squad. Why?”

A third fan wrote, “Can’t believe I’m saying this in 2025, but we need to play Eriksen.”

Meanwhile, a fourth fan offered a different perspective: “I can’t wait to see Manuel Ugarte replace Casemiro. Ugarte-Mainoo is the midfield pairing I want to see. Ugarte has the physical capability that Eriksen and Casemiro lack.”
