Bacary Sagna: Paul Pogba Could Return to Manchester United to Work with Ruben Amorim
Former France international Bacary Sagna believes that Paul Pogba would be eager to return to Manchester United for a third stint, particularly due to the opportunity to work under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Pogba, now a free agent, is aiming to revive his career after a difficult period. The 2018 World Cup winner ended his time with Juventus earlier this month by mutual consent, having played only 12 times during his second spell in Turin. This followed a major setback when Pogba received a four-year doping ban in September 2023 for unknowingly ingesting a banned substance. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the suspension to 18 months, allowing Pogba to return to training in January and to play by March 2024.
At 31, Pogba’s talent remains unquestionable. Sagna, a former defender for Arsenal and Manchester City, believes the midfielder could make a remarkable return to Old Trafford, two years after his last departure. Speaking to Mega Dice, Sagna explained why Amorim’s arrival could play a key role in Pogba’s potential comeback: “The situation at Manchester United is different now compared to when Paul was there. They have a young, modern coach who was a player himself and understands these situations. Amorim would likely be open to bringing Paul back because he knows how much Paul loves United.”
Sagna emphasized Pogba’s deep affection for the club, despite the challenges he faced during his second spell, which lasted six years and saw him win two trophies. “I’ve spoken to Paul many times, and he genuinely loves United. Things didn’t go as planned during his return, but he wasn’t the only player facing difficulties at the club during that time,” Sagna stated.
The current state of United’s midfield could strengthen the case for Pogba’s return. With injuries to Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, United’s options have been limited, while Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have struggled to finish games, as seen in the recent 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. Amorim, tasked with revitalizing the squad, might view Pogba’s experience and creativity as a valuable asset.
While concerns about Pogba’s fitness and form after such a long absence remain, the prospect of him returning to Manchester United under Amorim adds an intriguing element to his potential comeback. Whether this move will happen, however, is still uncertain.
