Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has named the league he wants to experience in the future – and Reds fans aren’t happy.
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in the summer of 2023, with Jurgen Klopp eager to make the Argentine his first signing of the transfer window.
The 2022 World Cup winner was a key part of a midfield overhaul that summer and has since become an important figure under Klopp and new manager Arne Slot.
Mac Allister would have been missed in Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton due to a one-match suspension for yellow cards. However, with the match being postponed, he will now serve the suspension against Fulham instead.
The 26-year-old midfielder is someone Slot hopes to build his team around for years to come, and with three-and-a-half years left on his contract, Mac Allisterâs future at the club looks secure.
However, Mac Allister has recently revealed that while he is “very comfortable” at Liverpool, he is considering his options for life after the club, particularly in La Liga.
In an interview with Spanish outlet AS, he said: “Yes, why not [play in La Liga]? It is a country I really like, and I have visited it several times. The language and culture are very similar to Argentina.”
He added, “Without a doubt, I would like to play in Spain one day. But for now, I am very comfortable at Liverpool.”
Although Mac Allister is likely to have at least a decade of playing time left in his career, and it’s unlikely to all be spent at Liverpool, fans are not pleased with his public acknowledgment that heâs already considering life beyond Anfield.
One person commented: “Why can’t they just say they’re only focused on Liverpool right now and see what happens in the future?”
Another wrote: “Bad move, Mac. Disappointing from him.”
A third remarked: “Just say you’re only thinking about Liverpool! There’s no need to say that.”
A fourth added: “I don’t like this.”
However, some were less bothered by his remarks: “No problem. Ideally, I’d extend his contract, but he still has three years left after this season. Everything’s fine.”
And another said: “Can’t fault him for being honest.”
