Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is said to be focusing on making an important signing in January to strengthen his team and boost their bid for the Premier League title.
This decision follows a disappointing 1-1 draw with Fulham, which highlighted Arsenal’s difficulties in scoring.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham took an early lead with Raul Jimenez scoring in the 11th minute. Arsenal responded in the second half, with William Saliba equalizing. However, Bukayo Saka’s potential late winner was ruled out by VAR for an offside in the build-up involving Gabriel Martinelli.
The 1-1 draw leaves Arsenal in third place, six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. This marks a significant drop compared to last season, where Arsenal had 36 points after 15 games, compared to the 29 points they have now.
Looking to close the gap, Mikel Arteta is reportedly focused on strengthening Arsenal’s attack. Journalist Charles Watts suggests Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has become a key target. The 22-year-old, known for his pace and creativity, has a £48m release clause, and is seen as an ideal addition to Arsenal’s wide positions.
Though Saka and Martinelli are crucial to the team, Arteta is concerned about the lack of competition and depth in those areas. Williams’ strong performances for Spain, including their Euro 2024 final win over England, further demonstrated his quality. He also earned a spot in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, finishing 15th, ahead of Arsenal stars Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Saliba, and Saka.
Williams’ potential arrival could inject new energy into Arsenal’s attack and add the depth necessary for a sustained title challenge. With the transfer window opening on January 1, all eyes are on Arsenal as they aim to secure this important signing.
