Premier League referee David Coote has been fired by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after an investigation into controversial remarks he made about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp. The decision, announced on December 9, follows Coote’s breach of his contract, leading to his dismissal.
The controversy erupted on November 11, when a video surfaced on social media showing the 42-year-old referee, seemingly intoxicated, making negative comments about Liverpool and Klopp.
In the video, Coote allegedly discussed officiating a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Aston Villa and commented on decisions during the match that negatively impacted Liverpool.
This incident has raised concerns about professionalism and impartiality within football refereeing, intensifying the ongoing discussion about referee conduct and accountability.
