Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has criticized Andy Robertson’s recent performances, particularly his mistakes that led to Liverpool dropping points against Fulham on Saturday.
Robertson’s difficulties started early when he was on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Fulham’s Issa Diop. Though some felt the tackle deserved a red card, both the referee and VAR opted not to penalize. Soon after, Robertson’s poor positioning allowed Andreas Pereira to score, giving Fulham an unexpected lead at Anfield.
The situation worsened just six minutes later when Robertson’s heavy touch allowed Harry Wilson to steal possession and break toward goal. Robertson’s desperate attempt to recover resulted in a foul outside the box, leading to a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Liverpool was forced to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
While Cody Gakpo equalized early in the second half, Fulham regained the lead in the 76th minute with a goal from Muniz. Just when it seemed Liverpool might suffer their second home defeat of the season, Diogo Jota saved a point with a late goal.
Carragher Calls for New Left-Back
In light of Robertson’s struggles, Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a new left-back, suggesting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as an ideal option. Speaking on Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail), Carragher said:
“(Against Fulham) He didn’t seem to be sprinting properly after that earlier knock, and his poor touch led to the red card. He needs support. Liverpool lack a real back-up, and this is something they need to address in January.”
Carragher also praised Kerkez, adding:
“Kerkez has been brilliant at Bournemouth. The technical director who brought him there (Richard Hughes) is now Liverpool’s sporting director. Kerkez is aggressive, a true full-back, and he has been excellent since arriving in the Premier League. He’s definitely one to watch.”
Robertson’s Continued Struggles
This isn’t the first time Robertson has struggled this season. He gave away clumsy penalties against Southampton and Real Madrid, though Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved both, preventing further issues.
Although Robertson remains a key figure in Liverpool’s recent success and is still a fan favorite, concerns over his form this season have grown, leading some to suggest it may be time for the club to look for a long-term replacement.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is a strong candidate, but Liverpool has also been linked with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, a high-profile option to strengthen the left-back position.
