Everton’s plans for the January transfer window have hit a setback as Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo has reportedly turned down a move to Goodison Park.
Arthur, who has found it difficult to secure playing time under Thiago Motta at Juventus this season, was targeted by Everton to bolster their midfield. However, his past connection with Liverpool seems to have played a role in his decision to decline the move to Everton.
Although his loan spell at Liverpool in the 2022–23 season was brief and hampered by injuries, Arthur is said to hold the club in high regard.
Sources from Juve FC indicate that his loyalty to Liverpool was the primary factor in his refusal, leaving Everton disappointed and Juventus facing challenges in finding a suitor for the 28-year-old.
Arthur joined Juventus from Barcelona in 2020 in a swap deal involving Miralem Pjanić. While he initially showed potential, injuries and inconsistency have since reduced his role.
Loan moves to Liverpool and Fiorentina were unsuccessful in reviving his career, and he has not featured in any competitive matches for Juventus this season.
With his contract running until 2026, Juventus is eager to offload Arthur in January to free up funds. While Everton’s interest seemed like a good fit, Arthur’s decision forces the club to explore other options.
Arthur’s brief time at Liverpool was marred by injuries, with his only appearance coming in a Champions League group-stage match. Despite the limited playing time, he reportedly formed a strong bond with the club, influencing his choice to reject Everton.
For Everton, the rejection is a significant setback as they aim to strengthen their squad for better Premier League performance. Meanwhile, Juventus must now work harder to find a club willing to meet Arthur’s salary and transfer demands.
