Forget about Auld Lang Syne and Big Ben’s chimes—nothing marks the New Year like the opening of the transfer window.
With January now here, rumors and speculations are already flying. Following Liverpool’s strong start under new manager Arne Slot, fans are eager for the club to bolster their squad while in a strong position.
Liverpool remains open to potential signings, given their history of making smart mid-season moves.
However, the transfer window also offers chances for departures. Here’s a look at the potential deals in progress.
Deals That Won’t Happen
Despite being out of contract at the end of the season, it’s clear that Liverpool has no plans to let Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold leave in January.
The Reds have already rejected an approach from Real Madrid for Alexander-Arnold. Additionally, given the critical roles Salah and Van Dijk play in Liverpool’s pursuit of success across multiple competitions under Slot, their exits this month are out of the question.
Liverpool hopes to secure new contracts for Salah and Van Dijk, but re-signing Alexander-Arnold may be more difficult due to strong interest from Real Madrid, a key player in the European Super League discussions.
Potential Moves
With a month until the transfer window closes, there’s plenty of time for activity, though most moves will likely occur on deadline day.
Given Liverpool’s current squad depth, it’s unlikely that fringe players like Wataru Endo will be allowed to leave. However, reports from Italy continue to link Federico Chiesa with a return to Serie A.
Chiesa has had fitness struggles since his summer arrival from Juventus, making only four appearances for Liverpool.
Another player facing uncertainty is Tyler Morton. Limited to three League Cup appearances this season and not featuring in recent Premier League matches, the 22-year-old’s future could depend on Liverpool’s needs as January progresses.
Loan Departures
Tyler Morton may be one of several players leaving on loan this month, depending on first-team requirements and potential injuries.
Teenage striker Jayden Danns almost moved on loan in the summer, but an injury halted those plans, while midfielder James McConnell, who has spent much of the season sidelined with fitness issues, might benefit from a temporary move elsewhere.
Among the Academy players, Harvey Davies, James Norris, Dominic Corness, Tom Hill, and James Balagizi are strong candidates for loan moves.
Having sent 12 players out on loan in the first half of the season, Liverpool has shown a willingness to recall players if their development is hindered by a lack of game time.
The club is currently assessing players like Kaide Gordon, who has not played for Norwich City in two months, and Calvin Ramsay, who is struggling for minutes at Wigan Athletic.
