Manchester United are on the verge of completing their first signing of the January window, according to reports, with the player set to undergo medical tests in the coming days.
It seems that unless there are player departures, Manchester United will avoid making significant spending in January.
In summary, the club must sell players to comply with profit and sustainability regulations. The sale of Marcus Rashford, a homegrown player, would count as full profit on their financial statement, especially as he continues to be linked with a potential move.
However, Ruben Amorim has seemingly conceded that January additions are unlikely. After their 2-0 loss to Newcastle on Monday, he said, “We don’t have that possibility in January,” adding, “It’s not that I’m coming here to spend a lot of money and change the entire team. You know the situation, so there’s little point in discussing it.”
Earlier this week, The Daily Mail reported that United had tentatively identified Nuno Mendes, Victor Osimhen, and Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens as potential targets.
However, regarding actual negotiations, it seems that highly-rated Cerro Porteno left-back Diego Leon will be the first signing in January.
Last month, it was revealed that United were in “advanced negotiations” to sign the 17-year-old, with interest from several top European clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City.
A transfer fee of $4 million (£3.1m) has reportedly been agreed, according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, who also stated that discussions have included add-ons and the player’s economic rights.
A few days later, Cerro Porteno president Juan José Zapag appeared to confirm that Leon’s move to Old Trafford would soon be official.
Now, journalist Bruno Pont has reported that Leon’s agent, Renato Bittar, stated the Paraguayan defender will travel to Manchester in the coming days to complete his medical.
Leon, considered one of South America’s most promising talents, has made a strong impact during his breakout season in the Paraguayan Primera Division.
After scoring the decisive goal on his competitive debut in August, he has become a regular starter, making 19 appearances across all competitions.
