Richard Keys has recommended that Liverpool sell Trent Alexander-Arnold, criticizing the right-back’s underwhelming performance against Manchester United on Sunday.
During the 2-2 draw at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold struggled in crucial moments, contributing to a surprising result given Liverpool’s strong form and United’s recent difficulties.
The match highlighted some of Liverpool’s weaknesses, with Alexander-Arnold’s performance being a focal point of criticism.
Keys suggested that the game exposed Alexander-Arnold’s limitations at Liverpool and proposed that Real Madrid would be a better fit for his abilities.
He pointed out that with Alexander-Arnold’s contract nearing expiration and Madrid reportedly offering £20 million, Liverpool should take advantage of the opportunity to resolve the uncertainty about his future.
In his blog, Keys wrote, “His performance clearly shows that Liverpool should accept Madrid’s £20m and bring an end to the transfer saga. He’s leaving anyway, so why prolong it? Liverpool’s season won’t hinge on keeping an average defender.”
While acknowledging Alexander-Arnold’s talent, Keys stressed that his strengths are not in defending, making Real Madrid a more appropriate destination. He also suggested that the ongoing contract talks could become a distraction for Liverpool.
Despite Keys’ opinion, Liverpool fans are likely to disagree, as the club is reportedly eager to extend Alexander-Arnold’s contract and retain one of their key players.
