Robbie Fowler says he believes that one player ‘is not a Liverpool player’ the more he watches him play for Arne Slot’s side.
Fowler is providing punditry for ITV during Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round match against Accrington Stanley.
Manager Slot made several changes to the team following Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, with Diogo Jota and Wataru Endo among those brought into the lineup.
Also returning to the starting XI is Darwin Nunez, who has only scored four goals this season and has faced growing speculation about his future.
Liverpool icon Fowler was asked about Nunez’s situation before the match and gave a harsh critique.
He stated, “The more I watch him, the more I feel he’s not suited to Liverpool. People might criticize me for saying that.
“You’re not signing a player just for his work ethic. A player needs to come in and score goals. I know he’s popular with fans because of his effort, but at Liverpool, you need to perform better.”
However, Fowler also believes Nunez has potential for improvement and offered advice on what he needs to change.
“He needs to be quicker mentally, especially with his finishing. He’s fast on the field, but his decision-making has to be quicker, especially as a striker.
“When he has time to think, he tends to struggle. His instinctive play is sometimes better, but still not enough. As a striker, his mental speed—knowing where to be and how to finish—needs to improve.”
